Ogyen Trinley Dorje is the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism devoted to preserving and propagating Buddhist teachings. Why you should listen The name "Karmapa" means "the one who carries out Buddha-activity," and for seventeen lifetimes, a karmapa has embodied the teachings of Buddha in tibet.
Karmapa means the embodiment of all the activities of the buddhas, or the one who carries out buddha-activity.
In the Tibetan tradition, great enlightened teachers are said to be able to consciously control their rebirth in order to continue their activity for the benefit of all sentient beings. On this page we will give you an overview of the Karmapa lineage, and a brief introduction to the life and many activities of the present Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje.
The first Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa , was born in He was the first of the great Tibetan masters to establish an incarnating lineage. Since his death in , successive Karmapas have incarnated in this form of manifestation body Skt. Prior to the birth of the first Karmapa, the arrival of a Buddhist master, who would be known as the Karmapa, had been prophesied by the historical Buddha Shakyamuni and the great tantric master of India, Guru Padmasambhava.
Throughout the centuries, Karmapas have been the central figure in the continuation of the vajrayana lineage in general and the Kagyu lineage in particular, and have played a very important role in the preservation of the study and practice lineages of Buddhism. For more on the Karmapas prior to the Seventeenth, see the page on the Seventeen Karmapas.
A more extensive biography continues below including details on how the 17th Karmapa incarnation was identified in Tibet. In June a son was born into a nomad family in the Lhatok region of Eastern Tibet. In the months prior to his birth, his mother had wonderful dreams. On the day of his birth, a cuckoo landed on the tent in which he was born, and many people in the neighborhood heard a mysterious conch-like sound, resounding throughout the valley.
In Tibet, such events are considered auspicious portents of the birth of an enlightened teacher. From the beginning, his family regarded him as special, and believed that he might be the reincarnation of a rinpoche. When he was four years old, they sent him to the local monastery to begin his education, though he continued to spend much of his time at home with the family.
In May , His Holiness made his first long-awaited trip to the West, traveling to the United States where he visited many spiritual centers under his guidance. This was followed by a second visit to the U. In , he visited Europe for the first time, teaching to massive crowds in Berlin and near his European seat of Kamalashila in Germany.
In January in Bodhgaya, 12, people attended the live performance of a play he wrote and produced on the life of Milarepa, combining elements of traditional Tibetan opera and modern theatre. Along with his efforts to preserve and present Tibetan culture, the Gyalwang Karmapa has also traveled across India to participate in the cultural and religious life of his adopted home.
He further serves as a Dharma teacher to the Buddha Vikas Sangh and other communities of Indian Buddhists around the country.
Out of reverence for the origins of Buddhism in India, His Holiness introduced the use of Sanskrit prayers in the massive Kagyu Monlam prayer gatherings he directs and has revived lost Indian Buddhist song traditions.
He has instituted numerous practical programs to care for the environment as a way of caring for future generations, and has personally committed to ensuring that in the future, women will have the opportunity to receive full ordination as nuns within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. In this way, the Seventeenth Karmapa acts within a vast horizon of benefit, yet his forward-looking deeds remain deeply grounded in a respect for the past. As a scholar and meditation master, as well as painter, poet, songwriter and playwright, the Seventeenth Karmapa embodies a wide range of the activities that Karmapas have engaged in over the centuries.
