That balance is a model for sustainable yield — enough refugia from human activity, good habitat for wolverines that are producing young that will emigrate out.

Hunters and trappers in Alaska harvest about wolverines each year. Wolverines disperse depending on availability of food and habitat resources, and animals dispersing from areas where they are not trapped replenish the population in areas where they are hunted and trapped.

A gallery of trail camera photos of wolverines is available, as well as a short video of a wolverine raiding the nest of a ground-nesting shorebird and eating the eggs.

Wolverines are sexually dimorphic; males are about 30 percent larger than females - 30 to 40 pounds compared to females in the 20 to 25 pound range. CWM is a male, and the red line shows his movements over about a month, between his capture and collaring Feb. The blue line shows the movements of CWF, a female captured March 2, and her last transmission June 12, , about a three-month period. Movements of 11 wolverines in the Chugach Mountains east of Anchorage, and one wolverine on the Kenai Peninsula further south.

Male wolverines use scent glands to mark their territories, however, they share them with several females and are believed to be polygamous. This requirement for large territories brings wolverines into conflict with human development.

Wolverine mating season is in the summer, however, the actual implantation of the embryo blastocyst in the uterus is stayed until early winter, delaying the development of the fetus. Females give birth to a litter of 2 — 4 young in the spring after a gestation period of 30 — 50 days. Kits sometimes live with their mother until they reach their own reproductive age at about 2 years old.

Females will often not produce young if food is scarce. Kits develop very quickly, reaching adult size within their first year. The life span of a wolverine may reach anywhere from 7 to 13 years. Hunting and trapping further reduce their numbers, causing wolverines to disappear from large parts of their former range. In the past, wolverines were hunted by trappers in North America for their beautiful coat, which was used as a lining for parkas.

However, this is not as common these days, with the wolverine being given protective status in several regions. Image Source. More Fascinating Animals to Learn About. New World Monkeys. They have strong jaws and teeth, and can crush a carcass and munch right through the bone. They have been known to eat the bones and teeth of their prey. Wolverines also seem to be aware of how to store food. Research shows that wolverines use snow as refrigerators to keep their food fresh.

During times when food is scarce, the wolverines will go back to their stockpile to and retrieve a meal. Wolverines prefer colder areas because they use the snow for dens, besides food storage. They live in the Arctic and subarctic, in grasslands, Alpine forests, taiga, boreal forests and tundra of Europe, Asia, and in North America in the northern latitudes.

Wolverines are solitary creatures, and need great swaths of territory to roam. Males mark their territory with their scent and only share their turf with females. Their territories can range from 40 miles 65 km to more than miles km. Wolverines are polygamous. This means that a male will mate with several females.
