On a rise a short way northwest of the centre is another welcoming park, this one a little larger, covering 20 hectares. A short jaunt from the city hall on Place de la Poterne is a historic fountain that is well worth a few minutes of your attention. The supporting buttresses and traceries are clearly gothic, but the sculptures are definitely renaissance. Mozac Abbey was a romanesque abbey that was destroyed by earthquakes in the 15th century and rebuilt in the gothic style with that black Volvic stone.
Thirty incredible sculpted capitals survived the damage and were later rediscovered to be put on display at the lapidary museum in the adjoining building. This definitely goes for Truffade, which can best be described as a kind of loose pancake fried with thinly sliced potatoes and tomme fraiche cheese.

Clermont's prosperity during the Middle Ages led to the building of its large Gothic cathedral and superb Romanesque basilica. It was constructed out of lava rock and is adjacent to the Place de la Victoire. The cathedral is Gothic in style with the tall, narrow arches typical of Gothic buildings as well an impressive collection of stained-glass windows. The basilica is located off the Rue du Port and is one of the most impressive of the roman style churches in the Auvergne region.
Take a look at the fantastic mosaic details on the semi-circular chapels then admire the inside which is nice and light and airy. The narrow streets around the two churches are worth exploring and many of the buildings in the area are also made from volcanic rocks. Restaurants and cafes are located throughout the center of town and in warmer months it is enjoyable to buy a sandwich to take to the Jardin Le Coq.
The Parc Montjuzet is another option, although it is a steep walk up to the top.
