Smart began exhibiting in group shows in the early s and had his first solo exhibition in Melbourne in Inspired by the poetry of TS Eliot, his early landscape The Wasteland II was painted during his formative years in South Australia where he began to establish his remote vision of the urban landscape.
In Smart left Australia permanently for Rome. It was during this decade he gained major recognition for his meticulously crafted paintings. Later he moved to Arezzo in Tuscany where he remained for the rest of his career; he died there in Smart dedicated himself to the representation of the modern city.
He executed each painting with classical precision and included repetitious architectural motifs which reference Renaissance perspective. And it's not as though Smart's early work did not indicate his future direction. One of his most celebrated early paintings The Cahill Expressway from is a scene reminiscent of Georgio de Chirico, but it is startling in its own right for its recognisability as an Sydney scene and doubly so for its timeless quality.
Smart was a prodigious artist with more than 50 solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne beginning in , including inclusion in group exhibitions in London at the Whitechapel Gallery in and at the Tate in A major touring retrospective Master of Stillness: Jeffrey Smart Paintings , currently on show at TarraWarra Museum of Art, is but the latest in a series of major career surveys.
